New Disney Haunted House Movie by Justin Simien

The version with Eddie Murphy, released in France in 2004, had not really marked the fans of the attraction …

Deadline reveals that Disney Studios are in negotiations with Justin Siemen , director of Dear White People and Bad Hair , to adapt one of their parks’ flagship attractions: the haunted house Phantom Manor. Populated by spirits, skeletons and distressed brides, it has marked several generations of visitors and should be entitled to a new dedicated feature, almost 20 years after the release of Rob Minkoff’s family comedy (Stuart Little, M . Peabody and Sherman ). This new project will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who recently worked on the live version of Aladdin with Will Smith in Genie, from a script by Katie Dippold (The Heat, Spy , the Ghostbusters of 2016 …).

In 2003, Disney was spending nearly $ 100 million to produce a live adaptation of this attraction with Beverly Hills Cop superstar Eddie Murphy , who was then a hit with family comedy Dr. Dolittle and The Nutty Family . If The Haunted Mansion and the 999 Ghosts paid for abroad by raising $ 182 million, its 75 million tickets raised in the United States put an end to the studio’s ambitions to draw a new saga, to the image of Pirates of the Caribbean , whose first opus, The Curse of the Black Pearl , had just made a huge hit.

However, since this semi-flop, there has been regular talk of a new film taken from the haunted attraction. In 2015, for example, Guillermo Del Toro ( Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water ), who was interested in it and planned to hire Ryan Gosling to make a real horror film , and not a family production, but he had just shot another haunted house story, Crimson Peak, for Universal, and that other project never came to fruition.
