The director talks with pleasure about his film released in 2001 and become cult since.
The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain will be rebroadcast this Sunday evening on TF1 Séries Films, just for the 20th anniversary of the film, released in France on April 25, 2001. A good reason to (re) discover our meeting with the director Jean-Pierre Jeunet , who came to tell us about it at the Première Cinéma Club.
In February 2016, Jean-Pierre Jeunet responded to Première’s invitation and came to present The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain to the Fauvettes audience in Paris, in two rooms packed to the brim with spectators marked by its beautiful story released in 2001. Fifteen years after this big success, the director has delivered many anecdotes about the making of his romantic comedy. Here are three particularly striking ones.
- The first choice of casting
After the screening of Foutaises , his short film from 1990 in which Dominique Pinon plays ” J’aime, J’aime pas” (narration which will be reused to present the characters of Amélie ), the director en scene recalled that he had first chosen Emily Watson for the lead role. Following his withdrawal, he auditioned Emma De Caunes and Audrey Tautou and was charmed by the latter. He then had to rejuvenate his suitor, and that’s when he thought of Mathieu Kassovitz …
- Jeunet has also returned to her wish to offer a positive film while experimenting with new technology:
“Amélie, it was the first film to be digitally calibrated. It was ‘open doors’, you could do whatever you wanted in terms of colors. It was a real revolution. The American Cinematographer, the Bible of chief operators of the planet, made an investigation and Amélie was named the most important film of the decade. Today, it seems a little too much, I would calm down on the colors, it is almost aggressive, but in the end. ‘time we did not want to deprive ourselves, we went very far in colorization “.
- The phenomenal success of the film
“Cannes had refused it, we had a little disappointment, but when the press screenings started, we felt that something was going to happen. I sometimes have premonitions, a bit like Audrey Tautou, we share That, and I felt that something was really going to happen. And so we started to do a tour in the provinces, to see the spectators getting up in archiple rooms… Something extraordinary happened with Amélie : we had both the support of the public, the critics and professional recognition. We always say that we must have one of the three, we have had all three. And all over the world! “
The best moments of the presentation of Amélie Poulain by Jean-Pierre Jeunet ( Jodie Foster in front of the café des 2 Moulins, the conference the day before September 11, the music of Yann Tersen who has toured the world …) are grouped together in the video above.
